Syllabus

5th-12th Grade

Course description: When Science meets Art, students will learn about the Human Body’s terms, parts, and functions through executing a series of anatomy paintings using Scalpel Art paintbrushes. Students will be working on their fine motor skills while holding a Scalpel Brush and using it to create art. Students will be developing both surgical skills and painting skills while simultaneously learning about the human body.

Course Content: Students will Paint an Anatomy drawing from the Scalpel Art Supply website.

Project 1: Instructor will choose a selection of Anatomy Drawings for the class to focus on from the Scalpel Art Supple website. Selections should be made according to grade/skill level.

This project is intended to be done over several class periods, estimated time: 5-10 hours depending on grade level.

Materials needed: Scalpel Art Kit, Cardstock or other thick paper to paint on.

Course Outline

  • Instructor will give a brief lecture about the Anatomy Drawing that is selected, teaching the student the terms, part, and function of the particular region or body part depicted.
  • Instructor will give a brief lecture on color, primary and secondary colors and color mixing.
  • Students will then label all the parts of his or her contour drawing illustration.
  • Students will then begin to practice using their Scalpel Brushes and mixing color. Students will paint a color wheel on scrap paper to practice color mixing and get the feel for the materials.
  • Students will then begin to paint on the anatomy drawing selected paying special attention to staying inside the lines and painting each section of anatomy carefully as if they were working on a human body.
  • After the anatomy is painted students may then begin to add their artistic touches to the piece, i.e.- any decorative or abstracted forms to the background.

When the paintings are complete students should demonstrate the knowledge of both the terms and functions of the body part they painted and the artistic knowledge of how and why they created their particular “piece”. A group discussion where the students teach each other about what they learned about the body and their artist decisions is one way. However each instructor can do this step as they see fit.

Course Objectives:

  • Students will learn and demonstrate knowledge of scientific terms and functions of the human body.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of using the Scalpel paintbrushes; students will learn both how to hold a paintbrush and a scalpel.
  • Students will learn about the primary and secondary colors, and color mixing.
  • Students will experiment with creating an original piece of art through their creative decision making process.
  • Students will be using both sides of the brain (right and left) to obtain optimal learning about Art and Science.
